The phrase 'Small is beautiful' is one that can quite comfortably be applied to The Lake Nakuru National Park.

The park is certainly small by wildlife reserve standards, covering an area of just 73 square miles, but it is a hugely popular destination for safari tours to see some of Africa's amazing wildlife.

Mention Lake Nakuru to anyone who has been there and the first thing they will think of is Flamingos - thousands and thousands of flamingos, which create a breathtaking vision of pink around the fringes of the lake.

Lucky visitors may also catch a glimpse of big cats including lions and leopards, and the park is also home to one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries.

Where is it?
Lake Nakuru is in Kenya's Rift Valley, part of a series of lakes that run the whole length of East Africa.

What is it?
As well as being an important sanctuary for the incredibly rare African black rhino, Lake Nakuru is flourishing with all manner of captivating wildlife from giraffes and lions to monkeys and pelicans.

Best time to visit?
The best time to visit Lake Nakuru is between June and September or from January to March, avoiding the peak of the rainy seasons.

Must see?
As well as the scenic lake itself, which is best viewed from one of the natural high points such as Baboon Cliff and Lion Hill, there are several other superb sights, including the stunning waterfall at Makalia.
