The Golden Gate – America
The Golden Gate area of San Francisco is home to much more than just the world-famous bridge. The region also contains two former American military sites, The Presidio and Fort Mason, which are now fascinating National Historic landmarks, as well as parks, valleys and beautiful beaches. The Golden Gate Bridge itself is truly stunning, the vibrant orange modern marvel of human architecture stretches magnificently over San Francisco Bay and weighs a staggering near- 900 thousand tonnes. The Presidio was removed from active military service just 10 years ago, but is now a thriving National Park, characterised by its lofty wooded areas which allow stunning views over the Bridge, the Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Fort Mason was also recently re-adapted from military duty to become part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is home to a multitude of interesting and historically important museums and galleries.
