Valley of the Kings - Egypt
For a real journey back in time, look no further than the awe-inspiring Valley of the Kings, the underground tombs of some of Egypt’s most famous and powerful Pharaohs. Explore the royal resting places of Tutankhamen and Ramses ll, to name two, set in two sides of a Valley close to the ancient city of Thebes, which is now modern Luxor. The site is still very much being discovered and excavated, with 63 tombs found so far. Walking around the ancient burial ground reveals the extreme wealth and power of the Egyptian leaders, with separate elaborate, and often gigantic, tombs prepared for each individual. Tutankhamen’s tomb is perhaps the most famous, but the Tomb of Ramesses VI is the most impressive both in terms of size and decoration. Guides help reveal the incredible history of the Egyptians by deciphering the incredible hieroglyphic writing, which revealed accomplishments and directions to safely navigate each Pharaohs journey into the afterlife. Constructed over 3000 years ago, The Valley of the Kings is truly one of the most remarkable archaeological destinations in the world.

Where is it?
The Valley is located in the hills immediately behind the West Bank of Luxor, which itself is situated in central Egypt on the upper banks of the Nile River.

What is it?
While the Pharaohs of the Old Kingdom were buried in the Giza Pyramids, the rulers of the New Kingdom of Egypt chose to be buried underground in the Valley of the Kings. They were mummified and adorned for a safe passage to the afterlife.

Best time to visit?
The best time to visit is from October to March, when the temperature is a little lower than the scorching summer months. However, temperatures can still reach 30 degrees centigrade in these winter months.

Must See?
The tomb of Pharaoh Hatshepsut rises spectacularly above the ground with a grand staircase and columned exterior. Hatshepsut was the only woman to rule Egypt as Pharaoh, not as a Queen, and constructed one of the most impressive and beautiful tombs of the Valley.
