Southeast Asia is full of historical attractions, but it's not overstating the case to say that none receive quite so much interest as the Temples of Angkor. It's easy to see why.
Spread across a wide area of Cambodian jungle, they offer hundreds of ancient sites to explore, ranging in scope from small stone ruins to still-mighty temple complexes.
The most famous of these is Angkor Wat itself, a superbly proportioned 12th-century temple that takes centre stage on the national flag. Like all the Angkor sites, it was constructed during the time of the powerful Khmer empire.
Other temples high on the must-see list are the root-covered Ta Prohm - as featured in the film Tomb Raider - and the meticulously sculpted Bayon, famous for its oversized stone faces. The nearby town of Siem Reap is well geared up for tourist visitors, with a good amount of high-end accommodation. It's best to grant a few days to explore the temples properly.
Where is it?
In the northwest of Cambodia, close to Siem Reap (which has its own international airport).
What is it?
A series of ancient jungle temple sites once used by the powerful Khmer Empire, which ruled from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Best time to visit?November to February is the peak season, with cool but pleasant days.
Angkor Wat is a truly remarkable sight. It's popular to enjoy sunset drinks while overlooking the complex, but you'll get most reward by visiting at a time of day when crowds are few.Writer: Ben Lerwill, British Guild of Travel Writers
