Karnak - EgyptKnown as the Vatican City of its time, Karnak is Egypt’s largest and most important ancient religious site. It’s easy to see why, as the vast complex covers over sixty acres. These hold an extraordinary complex array of temples, sanctuaries, obelisks and pylons. 4 millenniums have passed since Karnak’s original construction, which adds to sheer wonder experienced whilst walking amongst the gigantic buildings. The incredible Temple of Amun is the largest religious building ever constructed on earth, and is accessible by the inspiring and endless Avenue of the Sphinxes. The Hypostyle Hall is considered to be one of the greatest achievements of ancient Egyptian design and architecture, a stunning hall supported by over 130 enormous stone pillars. The Obelisk of Thutmose l is the only original remaining tower of four, and stands at an impressive 22 metres. Despite the multitude of riches available to visitors much of the site remains hidden from the public, which only adds to the sense of mystique and wonder which steeps this ancient wonderland.
Where is it?Karnak in the extreme north of Luxor which was the ancient city of Thebes, as well the great capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom Period. Luxor itself is situated roughly halfway down the Nile River in the centre of the country.
What is it?The Karnak complex is the work of several Pharaohs and was dedicated to the supreme Egyptian deity Amon-Ra. The site rivals the Great Pyramids with its immensely huge temples, forests of columns and avenues of sphinxes.
Best time to visit?Luxor is remarkably hot all year round, so the best time to visit is from October to March, when the temperature at least lowers a little. Even in the winter month’s temperatures can reach 30 degrees centigrade, so prepare to be warm!
Must See?The magical Son et Lumiere show takes place at night in front of the sacred lake. Music, lights and stories leap from the darkness, explaining each part of the temple with tales of pharaohs, gods, war and love. A truly unforgettable experience.
